Dennis A. Wicker, the former Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina, became the namesake for the Lee County Civic Center when the Central Carolina Community College Board of Trustees unanimously voted to name the facility in his honor, July 13, 1995. This decision breaks a long standing tradition of name recognition for monetary contribution and recognizes Mr. Wicker for critical contribution to the facility. In the college President Dr. Marvin Joyner's words "The fact is, the Civic Center wouldn't exist without Mr. Wicker."

This action was taken to recognize Dennis Wicker's personal efforts in the NC House to secure state funds for construction of the $3.5 million project. President Joyner, along with a host of other Lee County officials recognize, then House Representative, Dennis Wicker as the primary factor in funding the facility. In addition to chairing the special commission, Dennis Wicker sponsored a Bill in the NC House which allocated $1 million to Lee County as matching funds to further Economic Development in the Lee County area.

Dennis A. Wicker was elected Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina in 1992 and reelected in 1996. Prior to that, he served 12 years in the North Carolina State House of Representatives, serving Lee and Harnett counties.
